Buying basics

Heated blanket buying basics

How we pick

Check the shut-off timer

Sunbeam: 10 hours on blankets and pads, 3 on throws.

Buy lab-listed, never used

UL: buy one listed by a recognized lab, never secondhand.

Look for a detachable cord

Most with a detachable cord can be machine washed; the label comes first.

Two sleepers, two controls

Sunbeam's dual models give each side its own control.

Questions

Heated blanket questions owners ask

Can you put a heated blanket in the dryer?

Sunbeam's manual says yes, briefly: preheat the dryer on low, tumble about 10 minutes on low, take it out while still damp and finish drying over a line. Never use a commercial or laundromat dryer. Your own label comes first.

Can you wash a heated blanket in hot water?

No. Makers and Sleep Foundation give cold water and a gentle cycle; hot water can damage the wiring.

Can you dry clean a heated blanket?

No. Sunbeam says never to dry-clean one, because the solvents harm the wire insulation.

How often should you wash a heated blanket?

Sunbeam says to wash it before first use and gives no fixed interval. Sleep Foundation's general advice for blankets is monthly to every few months with occasional use, and weekly with daily use or pets.
